With a multidisciplinary team and access to the latest medical technology, Grady offers comprehensive, expert care for complex rheumatic diseases.

Grady Diabetes Center medical staff provides patients with medical support they need — both for the disease and its complications. Our educators provide patients with training on how to inject themselves with insulin and how to use the glucose monitoring systems and insulin pumps that are available on the market. The educators also offer training on the kinds of lifestyle changes that can help diabetics live fuller lives.

No matter what your eye care needs, Grady offers the right treatment option for you. We offer:

  • Consultations and surgeries: Diagnosis and treatment of virtually all eye conditions, injuries, and diseases; both medically and, when aggressive treatment is required, through surgery.
  • Eye examinations: The conduction of eye examinations and identification of issues.
  • Glaucoma and cataract screenings: Screenings that can help to determine if you need medical treatment for glaucoma or cataract.
  • Orbital and oculoplastic surgery: Reconstructive surgery focuses on the eyelids, eyebrows, the bone around the eye, and the tear system. The procedure is commonly done to correct and treat injuries and diseases of the eye, eyelid, and surrounding areas.
  • Refractive surgery: The procedure is used to improve the refractive state of the eye and decrease the need for correction through glasses or contact lenses. It can include cornea remodeling, lens implantation, or lens replacement.

Grady GI Center performs a wide variety of procedures. Some of the most common include:

  • Swallow procedures: Tests conducted to properly diagnose the cause of painful swallowing.
  • Endoscopy: Procedure that uses an endoscope to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. Endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ. For example, an ERCT is used to diagnose diseases of the gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas, and liver.
  • Colonoscopy: Endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a tiny camera attached to a flexible tube passed through the anus. Learn more about colonoscopy and bowel prep here.
  • Surgery: The center typically prefers to use robotic laparoscopic surgery to correct structural issues in the GI tract because it is minimally invasive and results in quicker healing and recovery and shorter hospital stays. Colorectal surgery deals with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. Occasionally, open or traditional surgery is required.

Pain management

No matter what your pain, Grady offers the minimally invasive right treatment option for you. We provide:

  • SwMedication: A wide variety of non-narcotic medical treatments to alleviate pain and help patients manage their discomfort.
  • Spine and joint injections provide temporary pain relief by sending powerful medications such as steroids to the source of your pain  to relieve pain and improve function and quality of life. We often do epidural steroid injections to alleviate radicular pain (pain down an arm or leg from a spinal nerve root).
  • Nerve blocks are injections that can be used to help diagnose and manage pain arising from specific nerves. Injection of medications, such as local anesthetics and steroids, directly by a nerve can provide temporary pain relief and improve function and quality of life.
  • Radiofrequency ablations use electrical currents produced by a radio wave to heat a small area of nerve tissue to decrease pain signals from that area. This is usually performed for pain originating from joints in the spine once the source has been verified.
  • Chemical neurolysis is an injection of a chemical like ethanol to destroy a sensitive nerve, in hopes of providing long-term pain relief.
  • Spinal cord stimulations are implanted devices that electrically stimulate the spinal cord to relieve pain. This can be used for select causes of chronic neuropathic pain (e.g. post-laminectomy pain syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome).

Grady’s Liver Clinic offers extensive counseling and education about hepatitis so patients understand their infections and their treatment options. Our liver assessments use a combination of imaging, other diagnostic tools, and lab testing to determine each patient’s condition and choose a course of treatment. Imaging sometimes includes Fibroscan®, also called transient elastography, a non-invasive way to measure liver stiffness.

The liver clinic offers antiviral medication for hepatitis C and assists with medication approvals and support during treatment. We also offer vaccinations for hepatitis A and B.

Common structural conditions we treat include:

  • Anal fissures are splits or cracks in the lining of the anal opening. The crack exposes underlying muscles that control the passage of stool through the anus. An anal fissure is painful, and can lead to bleeding or spasm after bowel movements. Learn more about anal fissures here.
  • Perianal abscesses can occur when the small anal glands in the anus become blocked, and bacteria present in the glands cause an infection. When pus develops, an abscess forms.
  • Anal fistula often follows drainage of a perianal abscess. It is an unusual passageway from the anal canal to a hole in the skin. Body wastes traveling through the anal canal are diverted through this channel, causing itching, irritation, pain, and bleeding. They usually need surgery. Learn more about anal fistulas here.
  • Colitis is a broad name for conditions that cause inflammation of the bowel. Colitis causes diarrhea, bleeding, and stomach cramps. Learn more about colitis here.

Some wounds take longer to heal than others. Grady’s wound care specialists treat chronic, slow-healing, and complex wounds to help prevent infection and speed up recovery. Common conditions we treat include:

There are countless causes of chronic pain and Grady treats them all. The ones we treat most often include:

  • Herniated discs occur when a piece of a disc is pushed outside the edge of the disc. Sometimes this can cause pressure against or irritation of a spinal nerve root which may result in pain down the arm or leg. When this involves pain down the leg, it is usually referred to as ‘sciatica’.
  • Back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide. Though caused by many things, conditions most commonly leading to the problem include muscle or ligament strain caused by heavy lifting or awkward movements. Other causes include arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and stress. Learn more about back pain here.
  • Neck pain is common, and typically is the symptom of prolonged straining, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, stress, wearing heavy necklaces, or osteoarthritis. In some cases, it can be a symptom of a more serious problem. Learn more about neck pain here.
  • Joint pain can be chronic discomfort, pain or inflammation involving a part of a joint, including the bone, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, or muscles. It may be caused by strain or a condition like arthritis. Learn more about joint pain here.
  • Neuropathic pain can originate from the nerves themselves and feels like pins/needles, burning, or electricity..  This may happen due to injury to the nerve from multiple causes including, but not limited to, medical conditions (e.g. Diabetes), compression (e.g. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome), and trauma (e.g. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)
  • Cancer pain can be caused by the tumor pressing on a nerve, bone, or other organ or by cancer treatment (e.g. chemotherapy, radiation, surgery).
  • Chronic trauma pain: Often, people who have suffered traumas experience chronic pain. For example, people injured in automotive accidents often experience ongoing pain long after their original injuries have healed.  Also, people who suffer from post-traumatic stress, such as military veterans and individuals who have experienced physical or emotional trauma during their lives, often suffer from chronic pain. Learn more about chronic trauma pain here.

The Grady Liver Clinic provides comprehensive care for people with chronic hepatitis C, the most common bloodborne infection. About 2.4 million Americans live with hepatitis C. Half of them do not even realize they are infected, and most show no symptoms.
