Dr. Yolanda Wimberly Earns Top Diversity and Inclusion Officer Recognition

September 28, 2022

Grady Health System Senior Vice President and Chief Health Equity Officer Yolanda Wimberly, MD, has been named a Top Diversity and Inclusion Officer by Atlanta Business Chronicle. Dr. Wimberly will be honored at the 5th annual 2022 Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Awards ceremony on November 10 in Atlanta.

Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Awards program seeks to “honor the leaders and revolutionaries who are embracing equality across all areas of diversity, including age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race, and religion.”

The Top Diversity and Inclusion Officer award recognizes Dr. Wimberly’s commitment to promoting diversity and health equity within Grady Health System and the metro Atlanta community.

“I’m fortunate to collaborate every day with staff members, medical teams, and a compassionate leadership team, who share in a common vision to see Grady become the leading academic health system in the country while maintaining a commitment to providing everyone with the quality healthcare they deserve,” said Dr. Wimberly. “We will continue to utilize data to inform community-based interventions that reduce health disparities and decrease the health equity gap of the people we are privileged to serve.”

Since joining Grady in 2021, Dr. Wimberly has successfully implemented a DEI committee, including executive leadership and multidisciplinary frontline team members. To amplify the DEI vision statement she adopted for Grady, Dr. Wimberly interviewed 90 frontline workers, leaders, and medical staff during a listening tour to educate them about health equity, ensuring it remains at the core of care delivery provided to patients at Grady.

Dr. Wimberly has further extended Grady’s reach to the young, diverse population of Atlanta and the entire region with the launch of the Teen Experience and Leadership Program (TELP). The program introduces teens and young adults to various healthcare fields through volunteer opportunities, giving them direct exposure to working professionals.

In addition to her leadership role at Grady, Dr. Wimberly is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Morehouse School of Medicine. She was recently appointed to Dollar General’s newly formed Healthcare Advisory Panel to help the discount retailer develop health and wellness services.

“The work Dr. Wimberly does daily shows her commitment to Atlanta’s most vulnerable residents and members of the community,” said John Haupert, president and CEO of Grady Health System. “Earning the Top Diversity and Inclusion Officer award is a true testament to her dedication to Grady’s mission to deliver the highest level of care to our patients and cultivate a supportive work environment for staff. We are grateful to have her as part of our team.”
