Acute inpatient rehabilitation at Grady provides intensive therapy after stroke, injury, or surgery. Learn how it differs from skilled nursing and how to start care.
Acute inpatient rehab is a specialized rehabilitation program for patients who are medically stable but still require close monitoring and extended, structured therapy.
Patients stay in the hospital and receive:
All patients participate in at least 3 hours of therapy per day, 5 to 6 days a week, along with 24/7 rehabilitation nursing care and regular visits from rehabilitation physicians or physiatrists who manage patients’ medical needs, pain, medications, and care plans.
The goal is to help patients regain strength, function, and independence so they can return home safely and resume their daily lives.
Acute inpatient rehab is often recommended for patients who:
Patients must be medically able to participate in daily therapy and benefit from an intensive rehabilitation program.
Choosing inpatient rehabilitation at Grady means continuing your recovery within a leading hospital system that offers both intensive therapy and immediate access to advanced medical care. Because your rehabilitation takes place inside the hospital, you benefit from seamless coordination between rehabilitation specialists and medical experts. If additional imaging, lab work, or specialty consultations are needed, these services are readily available, helping prevent delays in care and supporting a safer recovery.
Grady’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit provides:
Our team focuses on measurable progress, safe transitions home, and building independence. By combining hospital-level medical support with structured, intensive rehabilitation, Grady provides a comprehensive environment to help patients recover confidently and safely.
Understanding the Difference
Families often ask about the difference between acute inpatient rehabilitation and a skilled nursing facility (SNF).
Both provide rehabilitation services, but the level of care and intensity differ.
Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation (Hospital-Based)
Skilled Nursing Facility
Acute inpatient rehab provides more therapy and closer medical care than a skilled nursing facility.
At Grady, patients receive daily intensive therapy, hospital-level care, and 24/7 nursing support. This helps many patients recover faster, build strength, and safely return home sooner.
Skilled nursing facilities also provide rehabilitation, but therapy usually happens at a slower pace and with less medical oversight.
Your care team will help decide which option is best based on your medical needs, recovery goals, and ability to participate in therapy. When patients are already at Grady, staying here for inpatient rehab often allows care to continue smoothly with the same hospital team and resources.
Your care team will help determine which level of rehabilitation is most appropriate for your condition.
