Doctor's Bio

I am a physician-scientist dedicated to advancing research in the lifelong care of individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). To address the complex needs of SCD across all ages, I am dual-trained in pediatric and adult hematology. A critical knowledge gap exists in understanding how to improve the sickle bone marrow microenvironment, as marrow dysfunction contributes to erythropoietic and hematopoietic stress, factors that may increase the risk of hematologic malignancies, reduce the efficacy of treatments such as hydroxyurea, and limit the success of curative approaches like gene therapy. My research focuses on characterizing and targeting the bone marrow niche in SCD to optimize its health and enhance the outcomes of gene therapy. Clinically, I am committed to improving transitions of care and establishing comprehensive medical homes for individuals with SCD who have undergone bone marrow transplant or gene therapy, with a focus on monitoring and managing late effects.
