Dr. Annette M. Esper, MD, is a pulmonary and critical care physician who cares for patients with serious lung diseases and life-threatening illnesses at Grady. As Medical Director of the Stepdown Intensive Care Unit, she is dedicated to providing expert, compassionate care for patients recovering from critical illness while helping ensure a safe transition from the intensive care unit.

Dr. Esper earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston before completing her internal medicine residency and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Emory University. She also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Esper is committed to advancing the treatment of critical illness through research focused on sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). She also plays an active role in educating future physicians, helping train medical students, residents, and fellows while working to improve outcomes for critically ill patients.
