PGY-2 Oncology Specialty Residency

The PGY-2 Oncology Specialty Residency at Grady Health System (GHS) is a one-year ASHP-accredited program that offers a diverse experience for residents. The university teaching hospital environment and unique patient population provides opportunities for great learning experiences. Residents collaborate with Grady staff, as well as, attendings from Emory and Morehouse Schools of Medicine and fellows from Emory School of Medicine. Experiences include inpatient rotations, as well as, outpatient experiences in the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence, Avon Breast Center, and the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. In addition to malignant hematology and oncology, residents participate in palliative care and benign hematology services. Other activities include involvement with clinical research, chemotherapy order creation and management in Beacon, guidelines, policies, formulary management, precepting, and didactic lectures.

Learning experiences available to the Oncology Specialty Resident include:

  • Inpatient hematology (malignant and benign hematology)
  • Inpatient oncology
  • Palliative care (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Sickle cell (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Outpatient clinics including oncology, malignant hematology, and benign hematology
  • Bone marrow transplant (experience will be at a nearby hospital)

Requirements for application to the oncology specialty residency program:

General Requirements

  1. Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  2. Successful completion of an accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency
  3. Personal and leadership qualifications for successful completion of a specialty residency
  4. Eligibility for licensure in the state of Georgia

Specific Requirements (note deadlines)

  1. The following must be submitted by January 5:
    1. A Letter of Interest stating why the applicant desires a specialty residency at GHS
    2. Current Curriculum Vitae (include completed and anticipated residency rotations)
    3. Official pharmacy school transcripts
    4. Four (4) references completed on the PhORCAS Recommendation Form.
      1. Three recommendations must be from preceptors who taught the resident during a PGY-1 pharmacy residency rotation
      2. One recommendation must be from the residency director
    5. Residency Questionnaire: Please answer the following questions and upload them into PhoRCAS:
      1. What do you wish to achieve by the conclusion of the residency?
      2. Describe the ideal PGY-2 residency program.
      3. Which clinical rotations in your residency program did you most like and which did you least like? Why?
      4. What would your most recent immediate supervisor say are your strengths and weaknesses?
      5. Describe your most rewarding experience in your residency program or pharmacy school.
      6. When will you complete your PGY-1 training?
      7. Will you be eligible to sit for the Georgia practical exam in June? (for those applicants who do not currently have a Georgia pharmacist license)

Applicants invited for an on-site interview will be required to present a professional presentation on a topic related to clinical pharmacy practice (may present residency research project if some data collection and analysis has been completed).

Representatives will be available at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting Residency Showcase in December. On-site interviews will be scheduled in February.
