PGY-2 Critical Care Specialty Residency

Grady Health System PGY2 Critical Care Residency Program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in critical care areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in critical care.

The 12-month PGY2 critical care pharmacy residency program is designed to develop and refine clinical, leadership, research, performance improvement, and teaching skills within the practice of critical care. Training focuses on a full range of disease states, disorders, and procedures, along with the literature supporting the medication management of critical care conditions.

Rotations are designed to ensure experience is gained with the highest acuity patients in each sub-specialty area. Clinical knowledge needed to obtain board certification within the practice specialty is provided. Graduates are able to conduct research independently in the critical care environment and should be confident educators in the multidisciplinary and pharmacy training environment.

Learning Experiences may be assigned in any order throughout the year as resident and preceptor availability permits. Burn intensive care and Neurocritical care learning experiences must be taken after the resident has successfully completed a surgical or medical intensive care unit rotation as a PGY1 or PGY2 resident.

Required Core Learning Experiences

• Surgical Intensive Care 1 (8 weeks)

• Emergency Medicine 1 (4 weeks)
• Research/Admin/Intensive Care Rotation (3-4 weeks evenly distributed over the course of the year)

Applicants to the critical care specialty residency must have completed, or be in the process of completing, a pharmacy practice residency. The decision to continue in a second year of residency training demonstrates the resident’s commitment to professional growth and development. That commitment is taken seriously by Grady preceptors, who are full-time clinicians with an expertise in critical care, and are dedicated to assisting the resident through an intensive year of focused training.

The following must be submitted by December 30th:

1. A letter of interest stating why the applicant desires a specialty residency at GHS
2. Current Curriculum Vitae (include completed and anticipated residency rotations)
3. Official pharmacy school transcripts
4. Four (4) references completed on the PhORCAS Recommendation Request Form.
   1. Two recommendations must be from clinical pharmacist preceptors who taught the resident during a PGY-1 pharmacy residency rotation.
   2. One recommendation must be from the residency director.
   3. One recommendation from a person of the applicant’s choosing. This recommendation must be from someone who has worked with the applicant in a clinical setting or as an advisor during their PGY1 year.
5. Residency Questionnaire: Please answer the following questions and upload them into PhoRCAS:
   1. What do you wish to achieve by the conclusion of the residency?
   2. Describe the ideal PGY-2 residency program.
   3. Which clinical rotations in your residency program did you most like and which did you least like? Why?
   4. What would your most recent immediate supervisor say are your strengths and weaknesses?
   5. Describe your most rewarding experience in your residency program or pharmacy school.
   6. When will you complete your PGY-1 training?

Applicants invited for an on-site interview may be asked to present a professional presentation on a topic related to clinical pharmacy practice (may present residency research project if some data collection and analysis has been completed).
