Acute Inpatient Rehab to Help You Get Back to Living

Acute inpatient rehabilitation at Grady provides intensive therapy after stroke, injury, or surgery. Learn how it differs from skilled nursing and how to start care.

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation at Grady

At Grady, recovery doesn’t stop after surgery, stroke, or injury.

Our Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit provides intensive rehabilitation care for patients who need intensive therapy and daily medical supervision to support healing, restore function, and help patients regain independence before going home.

If you’ve experienced a stroke, traumatic injury, brain injury, spinal cord injury, or major surgery, inpatient rehabilitation can help you regain strength, mobility, speech, and independence.

Because your rehab takes place inside Grady, your care continues in the same hospital where you’re already receiving treatment. If you need a specialist, imaging, lab work, or other medical care, it’s available right away. No transfers, no delays.

Our rehab unit also offers private rooms to give patients comfort, privacy, and a quiet place to heal. This allows for more personalized care and space for families to be involved in recovery.

By combining intensive therapy with hospital-level medical care, Grady helps patients recover safely and get back home sooner.

What Is Acute Inpatient Rehab?

Acute inpatient rehab is a specialized rehabilitation program for patients who are medically stable but still require close monitoring and extended, structured therapy.

Patients stay in the hospital and receive:

  • Physical Therapy to improve strength, balance, walking, and mobility
  • Occupational Therapy to restore independence with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and self-care
  • Speech-Language Therapy to address communication, cognition, and swallowing difficulties
  • Cognitive Therapy to improve memory, attention, problem-solving, and safety awareness
  • Emotional and Social Support to help patients and families adjust to changes and prepare for discharge

All patients participate in at least 3 hours of therapy per day, 5 to 6 days a week, along with 24/7 rehabilitation nursing care and regular visits from rehabilitation physicians or physiatrists who manage patients’ medical needs, pain, medications, and care plans.

The goal is to help patients regain strength, function, and independence so they can return home safely and resume their daily lives.

What to Expect During Your Stay

  • Daily Therapy
Structured physical, occupational, respiratory, and speech therapy focused on rebuilding function that is specific to your needs. Our goal is to help patients make steady, measurable progress in strength, mobility, balance, self-care skills, communication, swallowing, and overall independence.
  • 24/7 Medical Monitoring
Around-the-clock nursing care and regular physician oversight to ensure your recovery is supported and you’re progressing safely.
  • Discharge Planning
We begin discharge planning on day one. Early planning to support a safe transition home or to the next level of care – including caregiver training, equipment coordination, follow-up appointments, and referrals for continued therapy if needed.

Understanding the Difference

Acute Inpatient Rehab vs. Skilled Nursing Facility

Families often ask about the difference between acute inpatient rehabilitation and a skilled nursing facility (SNF).

Both provide rehabilitation services, but the level of care and intensity differ.

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation (Hospital-Based)

  • Located inside a hospital
  • About 3 hours of therapy per day
  • 24/7 nursing care
  • Daily physician oversight
  • Designed for patients who need close medical supervision

Skilled Nursing Facility

  • Located in a nursing facility
  • Typically, 1–2 hours of therapy per day
  • Nursing care available
  • Physician oversight is less frequent
  • Often appropriate for slower recovery or longer-term care

Acute inpatient rehab provides more therapy and closer medical care than a skilled nursing facility.

At Grady, patients receive daily intensive therapy, hospital-level care, and 24/7 nursing support. This helps many patients recover faster, build strength, and safely return home sooner.

Skilled nursing facilities also provide rehabilitation, but therapy usually happens at a slower pace and with less medical oversight.

Your care team will help decide which option is best based on your medical needs, recovery goals, and ability to participate in therapy. When patients are already at Grady, staying here for inpatient rehab often allows care to continue smoothly with the same hospital team and resources.

Your care team will help determine which level of rehabilitation is most appropriate for your condition.
