CONDITIONS TREATED

What kinds of surgery does Grady offer?

The kinds of surgery offered by Grady specialists fall into three categories:

Open procedures involve incisions made with a scalpel. They are far less common than they once were because new technologies have made minimally invasive surgery an attractive alternative to traditional procedures for many situations. However, open surgery is still necessary when procedures require access to large areas, such as the insertion of a mesh to correct a hernia, or in situations where a physician needs to visually check for the complete removal of tissue or to diagnose a condition.

Also known as endoscopic or laparoscopic surgery, these procedures insert a tiny video camera or endoscope through a small incision or a natural orifice like the mouth or nostrils. Using tiny surgical instruments, a surgeon can treat a variety of conditions. The advantage of minimally invasive surgery is that it can be performed with small or no incisions, which means there is less pain, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, less scarring, and less blood loss.

Grady uses the da Vinci Surgical System, an advanced robotic system that makes it possible to perform delicate and complex procedures very precisely. This is especially important in highly vascular areas in the human body, such as the pelvic area. During robot-assisted surgery, surgeons operate from a console equipped with two master controllers that maneuver four robotic arms. By viewing a high-definition 3-D image on the console, the surgeon can see the surgical procedure better than ever before. Computer software replaces actual hand movements to make movements very precise. As a result, the da Vinci system provides surgeons greater control and visibility during surgery, allowing them to perform safe, less invasive, and precise surgical procedures.

The Grady Surgery Center was developed to provide the surgical care needed to treat virtually every medical condition, including:

Our team supports the Marcus Trauma Center and Grady Emergency Department, offering around-the-clock care for trauma and emergency surgery patients with the most complex and life-threatening conditions. They also are committed to preserving your urinary and sexual function, which can be affected by these disorders.
