Priyathama Vellanki, MD

Dr. Priya Vellanki, MD, is an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes and other conditions that affect hormones and metabolism. She has particular expertise in complex forms of diabetes, including ketosis-prone diabetes, a condition that can cause dangerously high blood sugar and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Dr. Vellanki’s research focuses on understanding why diabetes affects people differently and how factors such as genetics and sex may influence insulin production and the body’s response to insulin. Her goal is to use this knowledge to improve diabetes treatment and help identify which patients may eventually be able to reduce or stop insulin therapy safely.

She also has expertise in women’s health and has conducted research on insulin resistance and blood sugar problems related to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Dr. Vellanki is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and holds a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. Her work brings together patient care and research to find more personalized ways to manage diabetes and improve long-term health.
