Dr. Alicia Bonanno. MD, is a thoracic surgeon who specializes in treating conditions affecting the lungs, esophagus, and other structures in the chest. At Grady, she provides surgical care for patients with a range of conditions, including lung and esophageal cancers.

Dr. Bonanno has advanced expertise in thoracic cancer surgery, esophageal surgery, and robotic-assisted procedures. When appropriate, she uses minimally invasive surgical techniques that allow surgeons to operate through smaller incisions. These approaches may help patients experience less pain and recover more quickly.

Dr. Bonanno earned her medical degree from the University of South Carolina and completed her general surgery residency at Oregon Health & Science University. She then completed advanced fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery at Emory University.

Dr. Bonanno is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine. She also serves as Associate Program Director of Emory’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program, helping train future surgeons. Her research focuses on surgical education and improving outcomes for patients undergoing thoracic cancer surgery.
