PGY-2 ONCOLOGY SPECIALTY RESIDENCY  

The PGY-2 Oncology Specialty Pharmacy Residency is a one-year ASHP-accredited program that offers a diverse experience for residents. You’ll receive a great learning experience through collaborations with Grady staff, as well as attendings from Emory and Morehouse Schools of Medicine and fellows from Emory School of Medicine.

Prerequisites  (to be submitted by January 5th)

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Successful completion of an ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy residency
  • Eligibility for licensure in the state of Georgia
  • Personal and leadership qualifications for successful completion of a PGY-2 residency

  • 1. List the top three reasons you are specifically interested in the PGY2 Oncology Residency Program at Grady Health System and provide detailed examples from your personal experiences that demonstrate how this program will contribute to your personal and professional development.
  • 2. Describe previous experience(s) when you went above and beyond to address a health disparity or barrier to care for a patient?
  • 3. Describe a time when you had to solve a problem with limited resources. How did you approach the situation, and what was the outcome?
  • 4. Describe your most challenging PGY1 rotation or experience, highlighting what made it challenging and how you addressed those difficulties.
  • 5. When will you complete your PGY-1 training?

Applicants are invited for an on-site interview in January or February and will be required to present a professional presentation on a topic related to clinical pharmacy practice (may present a residency research project if some data collection and analysis has been completed).

Program goals

  • Attain invaluable experience through rotations with inpatient rotations, as well as outpatient experiences, in the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence, Edward C. Loughlin Radiation-Oncology Center, and the Ponce de Leon Center (Comprehensive HIV/AIDs facility· 
  • Develop skills, knowledge and insights through involvement with clinical research, chemotherapy order creation and management in Beacon, guidelines, policies, formulary management, precepting, and didactic lectures

  • Hematology I – Inpatient (malignant and benign)
  • Oncology I – Inpatient
  • Outpatient I (oncology and hematology)
  • Hematology/Oncology Infusion
  • Stem cell transplant – Inpatient (Outside hospital)*·     
  • Surgery Onc (1 week), Radiation Onc (1 week), Ponce de Leon Center (1-2 weeks)

*Resident may be required to pay for parking, liability insurance, and/or other fees at non-Grady rotation sites.

  • Any required rotation can be repeated
  • Pediatrics (Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta)* based on site availability

  • Oncology Practice Management
    • 4 hour weekly Cancer center pharmacy staffing shifts on weekdays (total 24 staffing shifts)*
      • §  * Formal Assessment will be completed in November to assess resident skills and experience. Once resident meets requirements on formal assessment for staffing, the resident will staff 4 hours every other week.
      • §  Once staffing is every other week, alternate weeks will include 4 hours of protected time for practice management, including operations, management, Beacon, and IDS experiences.
      • §  No oncology staffing or practice management shifts if at non-Grady offsite rotations (e.g. Stem Cell Transplant, Pediatrics)
    • Protocol/policy development
    • Beacon treatment plans and EPIC order setso

  • On-call. 24-hour hospital on-site = 13 shifts. Chemotherapy weekend on-call (from home) = 7 shifts. Inpatient Pharmacokinetics one unit coverage = 5 or 6 months
