PHARMACY
PGY-2 INFECTIOUS DISEASES SPECIALTY RESIDENCY
The primary emphasis of the PGY-2 Infectious Disease Residency Program is to develop clinicians with expertise in pharmacotherapy of infectious diseases and antimicrobial management. Residents completing this program will become a well-rounded infectious disease pharmacy practitioner.

Prerequisites
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
- Successful completion of an accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency or ASHP candidate status PGY-1 residency
- Personal and leadership qualifications for successful completion of a specialty residency
- Eligibility for licensure in the state of Georgia
- Letter of Interest – stating why the applicant desires a specialty residency at Grady Health System
- Current Curriculum Vitae – include completed and anticipated residency rotations and official pharmacy school transcripts
- Four (4) references – completed on the PhorCAS Recommendation Form Three recommendations must be from preceptors who taught the resident during a PGY-1 pharmacy residency rotation. One recommendation must be from the residency director
- Completed Residency Questionnaire – lease answer the following questionnaire and upload to PhORCAS:
- 1. What do you wish to achieve by the conclusion of the residency?
- 2. Describe the ideal PGY-2 residency program.
- 3. Which clinical rotations in your residency program did you most like and which did you least like? Why?
- 4. What would your most recent immediate supervisor say are your strengths and weaknesses?
- 5. Describe the most rewarding experience in your residency or pharmacy school.
- 6. When will you complete your PGY-1 training?
- 7. Will you be eligible to sit for the Georgia practical exam in June? (for those applicants who do not currently have a Georgia pharmacist license)
Applicants invited for an on-site interview will be required to present a professional presentation on a topic related to clinical pharmacy practice (may present residency research project if some data collection and analysis has been completed)
Representatives will be available at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting Residency Showcase in December. On-site interviews will be scheduled in February.
Program goals
- Attain experience in the management of common and uncommon infectious diseases
- Develop a solid understanding of microbiology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobials
- Strengthen communication skills through formal and informal presentations and interactions with other healthcare providers in a variety of settings
- Participate in an infectious diseases and pharmacy related interdisciplinary committees
- Enhance teaching skills by precepting pharmacy practice residents and/or students on infectious disease rotations

- Orientation (2 weeks)
- Microbiology laboratory (2 weeks)
- General Infectious Diseases consult service I & II
- Antimicrobial Stewardship I & II
- Inpatient HIV service I & II
- Critical care (ICU)
- HIV clinic (2 to 3 weeks)
- Complex outpatient antimicrobial therapy (COpAT) (2 to 3 weeks)
two 4-5 weeks rotations from two of the following options
- General infectious diseases consult service
- Antimicrobial stewardship
- Inpatient HIV service
- Infectious Diseases Transplant consult service (conducted at Emory University Hospital depending on availability)
two 4-5 weeks rotations from two of the following options
- Research project
- 24-hour in house clinical on-call program
- Journal club
- Practice management, drug policy, hospital committees
- Professional development
- Inpatient pharmacy staffing
- Teaching, Educating, Presentations
- 2 ACPE- accredited presentations (Seminar/Grand Rounds and Clinical Case)
- 1 infectious disease lecture for second- or third-year pharmacy studentso
- Co-precepting APPE student(s) on ID rotation
