PROTECT YOURSELF FROM HIV WITH PrEP AND PEP

Practice safer sex — get PrEp

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) offer two powerful ways to lower your risk of HIV. PrEP is for ongoing protection, while PEP can help if you think you’ve been exposed to HIV recently.

OVERVIEW

WHAT IS PrEP?

PrEP is a medication that greatly reduces HIV risk for HIV-negative people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Options include trusted medications like Truvada and Descovy, which are over 90% effective when taken regularly. A new injectable option, Apretude, will soon be available for bimonthly protection.

PrEP could be a good fit if any of these apply:

  • You’re concerned about HIV risk.
  • You sometimes have sex without condoms.
  • You’re not always sure of your partner’s HIV status.
  • You’ve been diagnosed with an STD.
  • You inject drugs or have a partner who does.

What is PEP?

PEP is an emergency treatment taken after a possible HIV exposure. It should be started within 72 hours of exposure and taken daily for 28 days. If you may have been exposed through sex, shared needles, or another exposure, PEP can help protect you. It works best when started as soon as possible.
