BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Mental Health Support Starts Here

Mental health challenges can affect how you think, feel, and function every day. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed yourself or noticing changes in someone close to you, knowing when to seek help matters.
If you or someone you love is struggling, help is here.

OVERVIEW

A vital part of healthcare

At Grady, we provide compassionate behavioral health care for adults experiencing mental health concerns from ongoing outpatient support to emergency psychiatric care.

ASKING FOR HELP IS A SIGN OF STRENGTH

Strength isn’t about handling everything on your own. It’s easy to feel like you have to push through in silence. But real strength is knowing when to speak up, reach out, and ask for help. Everyone needs support sometimes. Taking that step is part of taking care of yourself.

WHEN TO SEEK HELP

Recognizing the signs early can help people get support sooner.

Mental health concerns can show up in many ways, including:

  • Feeling persistently sad or hopeless
  • Severe mood swings
  • Pulling away from family/friends
  • Changes in behavior or personality
  • Trouble focusing or functioning day to day
  • Seeing/hearing things others don’t

When something feels off, pay attention. Mental health symptoms can build over time. Recognizing them early matters.

CONDITIONS TREATED

What are some of the behavioral disorders we treat?

Mental health challenges can take many forms and affect everyone differently. Our behavioral health team provides care for adults experiencing conditions such as:

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorders are brain disorders that cause changes in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. People with bipolar disorders have extreme and intense emotional states that occur at distinct times. They also have periods of normal mood. Bipolar disorders can be treated, and people with these illnesses can lead full and productive lives.

Co-occurring addiction

Addiction is a complex brain disease that compels individuals to compulsively use substances even if they can be harmful. People may be addicted to alcohol or other drugs to the point that the addiction takes over their lives. Addiction can distort how people think, how they behave, and how their bodies function. Effective treatments are available, and people can recover from addiction and lead normal, productive lives.

Depression

Depression is more than just feeling sad. It is a serious behavioral health condition that requires understanding and medical care. In any given year, 16 million American adults — nearly 7 percent of the adult population — experience serious depression. Left untreated, the condition can devastate individuals and their families. Fortunately, with early detection, diagnosis, and a treatment plan that includes medication, therapy, and healthy lifestyle choices, most people get better.

Psychosis

Psychosis means a loss of contact with reality. It is a symptom of several behavioral disorders and not a medical condition. During a psychotic episode, an individual may experience hallucinations or delusions and may see or hear things that do not exist. Early diagnosis tends to improve outcomes.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects less than 1 percent of the population. People with schizophrenia can experience delusions, hallucinations, trouble with thinking and concentration, and lack of motivation. There is no cure for schizophrenia, but treatment helps to manage symptoms. Most people with schizophrenia are not dangerous or violent and live successfully in their local community.

COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT FOR EVERY STEP OF YOUR JOURNEY

Mental health care is not one-size-fits-all. Recovery looks different for every person, and the support you need may change over time. That is why Grady offers a full range of behavioral health services designed to meet patients where they are and help them move forward with confidence.

Our services include:

Some patients need care beyond the clinic. Our community programs provide hands-on support in homes and community settings to help individuals manage their mental health, avoid crises, and stay connected to care.

We help connect patients with resources that support long-term recovery, including benefits, housing assistance, and services that help individuals work toward personal life goals.

Our outpatient team provides evaluations, counseling, medication management, and aftercare support for patients needing ongoing mental health treatment.

For patients experiencing severe symptoms or needing stabilization, Grady offers inpatient psychiatric care with a dedicated team focused on recovery and aftercare planning. Our medical psychiatric unit cares for patients with both medical and mental health needs.

Behavioral health support is available through Grady Primary Care and neighborhood health centers, helping patients access care early and in the settings they already trust.

When someone is experiencing a behavioral health crisis, immediate help is available. Grady provides dedicated psychiatric emergency services through our Emergency Department, where patients are evaluated and connected to the level of care they need. We also partner with a community co-response team that responds to psychiatric 911 calls within the City of Atlanta, pairing a Grady paramedic with a licensed behavioral health clinician.

We offer programs designed to help patients return to work, school, and meaningful daily activities while rebuilding confidence and independence.
