General Surgery Center

The Best Surgical Options for You

The Grady General Surgery Center is designed to meet the unique needs of each patient. Staffed by multidisciplinary medical providers who include specialists in cancer, joint issues, neurovascular, and other diseases, we offer Atlanta’s best surgical care.

Grady handles all types of surgery. Often, we can use minimally invasive procedures, which enable patients to heal more quickly, experience less pain, and return to their normal routines faster. But when traditional surgery is required, we can handle it, using the latest technology.

Our team members perform thousands of procedures each year. But they specialize in meeting each patient’s needs. Our goal is to restore normal routines as quickly as possible.

Endocrine (thyroid and adrenal glands)

Endocrine surgeons at Grady specialize in removing cancerous and noncancerous tumors of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, as well as neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas. Most procedures use minimally invasive techniques, which encourage faster recovery, less pain, and reduced scarring.

General and gastrointestinal (GI)

Grady surgeons perform the full spectrum of surgical procedures needed to treat the variety of gastrointestinal diseases patient suffer. This can range from minimally invasive bariatric surgery to open abdomen surgery.

Gynecologic

Grady surgeons perform procedures to remove benign and malignant tumors, correct infertility, and address medically related incontinence.

Neurologic (brain and spine)

Our surgeons have vast experience with disorders that affect any portion of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and the cerebrovascular system.

Ophthalmology (eye)

Grady surgeons are skilled at performing delicate ocular or eye surgery to correct the damage of trauma, reverse the visual loss of cataracts, and treat the impact of glaucoma.

Maxillofacial (oral or dental)

Our surgeons can perform operations on the tissues of your mouth, including teeth and gums, or in your jaw, head, or face. The most common procedures include the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, sleep apnea treatments, reconstructive jaw surgery, and dental implants.

Otolaryngology (head and neck)

Our surgeons are specialists in performing operations to manage ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders, including hearing issues, difficulties with speech, and difficulty swallowing.

Orthopedic (hips, elbows, shoulders, and joints)

Grady orthopedic surgeons treat a variety of joint issues, as well as sports-related problems, degenerative diseases, and trauma.

Thoracic (lungs, chest, esophagus, and diaphragm)

Grady is nationally recognized for its traditional and minimally invasive procedures to treat all manner of thoracic problems, including cancerous and noncancerous disorders of the lungs, chest wall, esophagus, and diaphragm.

Urology

Grady surgeons are expert at performing advanced, minimally invasive treatments — including robotic surgery — for a variety of urologic conditions, including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, urinary tract infections, and erectile dysfunction. They also are committed to preserving your urinary and sexual function, which can be affected by these disorders.

Vascular and endovascular (blood vessels and lymph system)

Our surgeons perform operations to correct narrowed, blocked, or dilated blood vessels outside the heart and brain. Endovascular surgery is a minimally invasive approach to these procedures, but sometimes does not offer the flexibility needed to treat more serious conditions.

The kinds of surgery offered by Grady specialists fall into three categories:

Traditional or open surgery

Open procedures involve incisions made with a scalpel. They are far less common that they once were because new technologies have made minimally invasive surgery an attractive alternative to traditional procedures for many situations. However, open surgery is still necessary when procedures require access to large areas, such as the insertion of a mesh to correct a hernia, or in situations where a physician needs to visually check for the complete removal of tissue or to diagnose a condition.

Non-robotic, minimally invasive surgery

Also known as endoscopic or laparoscopic surgery, these procedures insert a tiny video camera or endoscope through a small incision or a natural orifice like the mouth or nostrils. Using tiny surgical instruments, a surgeon can treat a variety of conditions. The advantage of minimally invasive surgery is that it can be performed with small or no incisions, which means there is less pain, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, less scarring, and less blood loss.

Minimally invasive robotic surgery

Grady uses the da Vinci Surgical System, an advanced robotic system that makes it possible to perform delicate and complex procedures very precisely. This is especially important in highly vascular areas in the human body, such as the pelvic area. During robot-assisted surgery, surgeons operate from a console equipped with two master controllers that maneuver four robotic arms. By viewing a high-definition 3-D image on the console, the surgeon can see the surgical procedure better than ever before. Computer software replaces actual hand movements to make movements very precise. As a result, the da Vinci system provides surgeons greater control and visibility during surgery, allowing them to perform safe, less invasive, and precise surgical procedures.
