Dr. Matthews’ area of special interest in Gynecologic Oncology is preinvasive cervical disease. He was granted a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Clinician and Scientist Award in 2004. He is currently working to understand protein biomarkers of cervical cancer risk and studying the gene prohibitin and its functional significance as a tumor suppressor in women with gynecologic cancers. He is Vice- President of the Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education (CORE) board, an independent non-profit organization working to improve cancer care in Georgia by strengthening clinical cancer research throughout the state.

Prior to joining the faculty of The Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Matthews served as the Director of the Division of Medical Education at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He received the Mannix Award for Excellence in Medical Education by The New York State Medical Association. There he had an active gynecologic oncology practice, participated in the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) and was responsible for training the Gynecologic Oncology fellows.

Dr. Matthews serves on several boards of directors and committees locally, statewide and nationally – principally focused on women’s health, cancer and increasing health care access for underserved communities. Some of his appointments include the following: Chairperson of the Cancer Registry Sub-Committee at Grady Health System; member of the Grady Steering Committee; member of the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence; and member of the Academic Policy Council at Morehouse School of Medicine.

Dr. Matthews received his AB Degree in Biology from Columbia College, Columbia University; and his Medical Degree, with distinction in research, from Stonybrook School of Medicine at the State University of New York. He completed his residency and fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at Kings County Hospital Center, SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn and was an American Cancer Society Clinical Fellow in Oncology. Throughout his career, Dr. Matthews’ research, education and clinical activities have focused on reducing disparities in underserved communities.
