Allergy & Asthma Treatment

Fighting a Growing Problem

More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies. Another 26 million have asthma. And the number of people affected by these conditions appears to be increasing.

The Grady Asthma & Allergy Center offers comprehensive testing services and state-of-the-art treatment for asthma.

Our physicians are board-certified allergists. Collaborating with nurses and other team members, they help thousands of patients identify their allergies and treat their asthma. We provide the best asthma treatment available in Georgia, the diagnostic testing to properly identify your sensitivities, and the care to let you resume your daily routine.

Why Choose Us

There is no cure for asthma and allergies, but we help you understand your condition and what steps you can take to manage it. There are countless new and effective ways to treat asthma. We offer them all. For example, Grady is one of a handful of Atlanta hospitals offering biologic therapies that have been found effective in treating some types of asthma that are resistant to traditional inhaler therapy.

We do not currently offer allergy injections, but our board-certified allergists can perform the tests needed to identify your sensitivities, whether they are environmental, food-based, or drug-based.

And, because people with asthma and allergic conditions often have other health issues, Grady offers a unique advantage. We’ve spent more than 125 years building the most comprehensive medical services in Atlanta to deliver the best care possible.

What We Treat

Grady diagnoses the types of asthma and allergies you have and counsels you on the steps you can take to manage your condition. Sometimes, preventing allergy symptoms is far more effective than treating them with medication. We do not offer allergy injection therapy at this time but can prescribe a variety of medications to relieve your symptoms. We also offer the broadest range of therapies available for asthma.

Environmental allergies

Most allergies are environmental. They are typically caused by exposure to pollen, dust mites, mold, or animal dander. The most common symptoms are sneezing, runny nose, itchiness, and ear infections. We can identify the specific cause of your allergy and recommend a variety of treatments.

Food allergies

The prevalence of food allergies in children increased by 50 percent between 1997 and 2011. More than 170 foods have been found to cause allergic reactions. These allergies can trigger symptoms ranging from mild itchiness to severe throat tightening that can cause death. Identifying specific food allergies allows you to avoid foods that pose a risk.

Drug allergies

These abnormal reactions to a prescription, herbal, or over-the-counter medication most commonly result in hives, rash, or fever. But they sometimes cause a serious, life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis. The only way to deal with these allergies is to avoid medications to which you have a sensitivity. Our testing will help you identify potential problem drugs.

Asthma

No one knows what causes asthma, but genetics, allergies, respiratory infections, and environmental issues are factors. We can diagnose asthma, determine your level of severity, create a treatment plan that’s suited to your lifestyle, and help you monitor your condition.

There is no cure for asthma, but we offer state-of-the-art therapies, including biologic treatments, that will help you keep your asthma under control, let you breathe easier, and return to your normal activity level.
