Every 45 seconds, someone in the U.S. experiences one or more symptoms of stroke. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in this country. It’s also the third-leading cause of death in Georgia, which is located in the heart of the “Stroke Belt.” In Atlanta alone, 41 percent of all adults have a family member who has had a stroke.

About Stroke

Stroke is a serious, potentially life-threatening medical condition. It’s best described as a sudden attack on the brain. During this attack, the brain’s blood supply is interrupted. Because the brain cells are deprived of oxygen and vital nutrients from the blood, they begin to die within minutes. The damage can continue for several days, or it can be swift and fatal.

The Five Warning Signs

• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
• Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

If you or someone near you experiences any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. Even if the symptoms seem minor, don’t hesitate. Failure to call for emergency help can affect the chances for recovery or even survival.

The Marcus Stroke Center at Grady offers a state of the art Neurocritical Care Unit, providing an optimal environment for the highest quality patient care, scientific discovery and training.

• Imaging Suite is on the unit and features a high-speed 64 slice CT scanner
• A dedicated bi-plane neuroangiography suite on the unit
• Continuous cardiac and physiologic monitoring and recording including synchronous EEG and video
• 18 ICU beds and 19 intermediate care beds

Parking (Butler Parking Deck) is on Jesse Hill Jr. Drive and is attached to McDonalds. This is the only parking available in the area and is reserved exclusively for the Grady Health System campus. Click here for directions.
